To no real surprise Apple introduced the new small iPad Pro as part of its spring events, which basically is the overdue update of the iPad Air 2.
This is quite a logical and easy step for Apple, seeing that the 12,9" iPad Pro is packaged in a smaller unit with a 9,7" display. According to Apple the the new iPad Pro also uses the A9X chip, meaning the model has more than enough power to take advantage of all the multitasking features introduced by iOS 9.
Just like all 9,7" iPads with a Retina display it offers a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels, resulting in a pixel density of 264 ppi. Some things have changed compared to the iPad Air 2. Reflections on the display are claimed to have been reduced by 40 percent, while the maximum brightness has been increased by 25 percent. Just like the last iMac update Apple relies on the especially large DCI-P3 color space. Apple is using a a True Tone display with four ambient light sensors adjusting the brightness and color temperature for the new iPad Pro. The whiteness of paper will always be displayed correctly, as the sensors adjust colour temperature to match ambient light is taken.
Needless to say the smaller version can do all the larger iPad Pro can, as it also supports the Apple Pen. The iPad Pro Smart Connector is also there, allowing the keyboard to be hooked up to the iPad. Apple also upgraded the camera, the new 9,7" iPad Pro is on par with the current iPhone 6s. A camera with 12 MP resolution is used, including an LED flash for the first time. Also on board are features like Live Photos or 4K videos, also known from the current iPhone 6s.
Apple also adjusted standard memory configurations to be in line with the Pro series, the smallest model now has 32 GB - a step that was long overdue. To a certain extent this also affects the price, with prices starting at 689 euro it is far more expensive than the entry-level iPad Air 2, with 16 GB. Totally new is a model with 256 GB, seting users back 1,049 euro in the WiFi version. The maximum memory capacity of the large iPad Pro will also be adjusted upwards..
People who want to use the iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil and the keyboard need to pay a lot of money. There also is a new card reader and a USB adapter, so that for example, an Ethernet adapter can be used.
